Have yous seen my costless Color Me Readers?  They're very bones books that I use to help my kids learn bones concepts of print and (if they're ready) simple sight words.

But I've found that my Three often struggles with those. Unlike his older siblings, concepts of print oasis't come easily to him.  When he pointed to one word and said a total judgement, information technology was clear that nosotros needed more piece of work on the "concept of word."

What is "concept of word"?

It just means that when you see one word on the paper, you say ane word.  Children who grasp this concept tin can match their vocalization to print. Concept of word is just i of many concepts of impress that children need to understand before they're gear up to practise things similar sound out words.

The activity

Hither's what I did.  I took something of high interest to him (vehicles) and created a printable reading activeness he could carry around.

I made a set of forty cards featuring ten types of transportation:

  • helicopter
  • car
  • police car
  • burn down truck
  • truck
  • school bus
  • plane
  • boat
  • train
  • dump truck

For each type of transportation, I created four cards (using existent images, because those are more than fun!).  Each card had a sentence that added 1 more discussion than the previous one. (Yes, I realize that some of these are not complete sentences. Hang with me here.)  Under each word I put a blackness dot.

  • Motorcar.
  • A car.
  • A big automobile.
  • I see a large car.

I printed the cards on cardstock, laminated, cut them apart, and put them in society on a metal ring.  He would read the first discussion of a set by identifying the motion-picture show and pointing to the dot.  I told him he should only say a single give-and-take when pointing to a dot.

The 2d word in a fix added the discussion "a."  I wanted this very elementary, since he does non read words nevertheless, beyond his name. The point was to understand vox to print matching, not to memorize words.

The adjacent sentence had the word "big" inserted. (Sorry for the dark picture! Information technology was a rainy day.)

Finally, the concluding card of each prepare included the discussion "encounter."

By "reading' each card in a set, he was able to boring downwardly to match each discussion he spoke to a give-and-take on the card.

How it went

How did it go, y'all ask?

Well, at kickoff I wasn't and then sure.  When I presented him with the activeness he wanted to attempt it right away.  Nonetheless, nosotros were heading out the door.  So his first time "reading" it was from the backseat while I was driving him and his footling sister to a check-upward for baby #6.

I wasn't able to sit with him and help, although he was determined to get through the whole stack.

He often forgot the pattern.

"What practise you say when you accept i dot?  (5 minutes later) What practice you say with i dot once again?  What do you say with 2 dots? (Two minutes later) What do you lot say with two dots over again?"

I would say things like this:

  • "Well, if information technology has one dot, say the name of the picture.  What alphabetic character does information technology get-go with? ("B.") And then…/b/,/b/,/b/…. that's right, boat!"
  • Or "Information technology has two dots?  Look at the first letter of the alphabet. What word does that brand? ("A.")  Good.  Now go along going.  "A…."  ("A helicopter.")  Yes, good!"
  • Or "If it has three dots, start with the first word.  What is that? ("A.")  Okay, now add the middle word.  /b/, /b/, big.  Tin can you finish it?" ("A big truck.")  You lot got information technology!"

The third time we did the activeness, information technology all started to come together. I even mixed the cards up in the ring so that he could not read them by pattern… he actually had to notice the words and the dots.

And he did cracking!

I program to use this again and create like activities in the futurity.  We promise y'all can utilize it!
